Statistics 

  • Rainfall over the country during SW Monsoon 2023 (June-September) was 820 mm which is - 5.6 % of Long Period Average of 1971-2020 calculated by the  India Meteorological Department.
  • Rainfall over Northwest India during SW Monsoon 2023 (June-September) was 593 mm  which is +1 % of Long Period Average of 1971-2020 calculated by the  India Meteorological Department.
  • Rainfall in NW India in June 2023 was 111.1 mm which is 42% Above Normal from its Average of 78.1 mm [Although, in reality it can be attributed to the excessive rainfall in Rajasthan due to remnants of Cyclone Biparjoy].
  • Rainfall in NW India in July 2023 was 261.4 mm which is 25% Above Normal from its average of 209.7 mm [Can be attributed to the extreme flood in Northwest India in first half of the month]
  • Rainfall in NW India in August 2023 was 123.8 mm which is 37% Below Normal from its average of 197.1 mm [*India recorded its Lowest Ever August Rainfall since 1901 this year which was 162.7 mm, 36% Below Normal]
  • Rainfall in NW India in September 2023 was 91.6 mm which is 11% Below Normal from its average of 102.7 mm

Extreme Events & associated Rainfall Data 

JUNE 2023

During June 2023, Cyclone Biparjoy formed in Arabian sea on 6th June and made Landfall in Gujarat near Jakhau Port on 15th June, dissipated over East Rajasthan on 19th June (it further travelled as a LPA towards Uttar Pradesh via Northwest Madhya Pradesh). It caused widespread Extremely Heavy Rainfall in Rajasthan.

JULY 2023

During July 2023, a Western Disturbance and Monsoon interaction occurred which brought one of the worst flood in Northwest India in past several decades, Chandigarh, Ambala, Ridge (Delhi), Bilaspur Sadar, Manali, Pahalgam, Leh & Katra recorded their highest ever 24hr Rainfall [list is given below]                                  Data Source: IMD

AUGUST 2023 

This year, August recorded its lowest ever monthly rainfall since 1901 which was 162.7 mm, 36% Below Normaas per data of IMD. 
Monsoon Trough remained near foothills on most of the days.
Extreme Rainfall occurred in parts of Himachal Pradesh &  Uttarakhand. Rishikesh in Uttarakhand recorded two 400+ mm events in the month; 434.6 mm and 419 mm  at 8:30 AM Ending of 10th & 14th August respectively. Such exceptionally heavy rainfall is rare for the region as per records but now frequency of extreme events is increasing with climate change.

SEPTEMBER 2023

IMD declared withdrawal of SW Monsoon 2023 from parts of West-Southwest Rajasthan on 25th September. Further, on 30th September; it was declared for entire North Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and parts of Jammu, H.P, Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh. 
A active western disturbance affected Northwest India during 23-25th September 2023 in which hails were also reported from parts of Sirsa district of Haryana. Few peaks received fresh snowfall in Himalayas. Exceptionally heavy rainfall of 324 mm was recorded in Fatehpur and 304.8 mm in Bilaspur of Uttar Pradesh on 11th September.
